The problem with this generation and the ones after me is that they don’t realize that this, these things we do now, do not matter in the world we live in. You dress up nice to go out not because you love the clothing you wear or the style you don when you’re at that particulair thing. You wear them because it is what is expected of you. You go to a dubstep party, you are expected to wear whatever it might be that is currently being promoted by MTV and high schools. And why do we focus on what these little brats think is fantastic? They’ve not developed at all, they don’t know what they want,they are just following what the people before them did. Then why do advertising agencies promote urban-wear, urban lifestyles? I am inclined to believe that this isn’t a very large demographic, sales wise. They’re 15-17! Granted, they probably have jobs, and seeing as the clubs these days have an age limitation of 21 and up, the money has to go somewhere. And what do they do? They spend it on clothing. Then I say, hats off to you, marketing. But when in godsname did parents lose controll? I am all for breaking free and discovering what you want but if it leads to weird baseball inspired hats and no idea what a pocket square is then maybe we are letting kids off with too much.

I do not admire the task of organising parties. A majority of people,let me rephrase that, THE majority of people I’ve ever talked to seem be highly attracted to the notion of organising big scale parties. Now don’t get me wrong, I fully understand the idea behind it, the person in question likes to attend parties, therefore it would be amazing to organise one yourself. The problem herein lies is that whatever said person organises, will be most likely a copy of the party he/she once attended that was most enjoyable.
Herein lies the entire problem I seem to have with the industry.
It all seems to me to be a copy, of a copy, of a copy, of a copy, of a party once thrown in the 80’s. It evolves,sure, yet the idea is still the exact same. Everything has been done to death. Why? because it works. There is a demand for these parties and a certain expectation of what is to come. There will be a DJ playing dance,R&B and sadly nowadays Dubstep. There will a crowded bar, a dance area, and people not adhering to the dresscode provided by the organiser. There will be frowning bouncer outside with a line of people dressed for a lush summersday in Tuscany, whilst freezing their ass off. It will start at 10, noone will arrive ‘till 11:30, by 2 most will have gone and 2 hours later the clubowner is smiling behind his table counting the cash. It just simply WORKS. People WILL come, people WILL buy hugely overpriced and less then half of what they will have poured for themselves drinks, people WILL come next time.
Now even though the setting is not always the same, the formula doesn’t change. Where is the innovation? Where is the thrill of something new? The fact is, most of the time it doesn’t pay off to take risks. Not in this small town, anyway.But there IS a market for something different. People are starting to notice the pattern of parties. The few who do do not propose to change anything though, they push their boundaries by drinking more. I do it. My friends do it. It’s not perfect, but it’s a way to get through the goddamn night. I don’t want to depend on my friends to have a good time at events. I want to be blown away again. I want that excitement I used to have when I just started clubbing.
I confess that even though I know how tonight will be, I am looking forward to it. Why? Because YES it’s been done to death, but that doesn’t mean I did not have a good time.
